Almost everyone has a favorite teacher, someone who went out of their way to help you succeed because they saw your potential. World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on October 5th and on October 6th in Sri Lanka. It is a time to honor teachers worldwide for their role in shaping future generations.Every year, this day, also known as International Teachers’ Day, is commemorated to mark progress and reflect on ways to address the challenges that teachers face. According to the United National Educational Scientific Cultural Organization, this year’s theme is “Teachers at the Heart of Education Recovery,” which honors teachers for their tireless efforts, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns (UNESCO).
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) believes that education, culture, and communication are important tools for promoting peace. In 1994, UNESCO established World Teachers’ Day to highlight teachers’ contributions and accomplishments, as well as their concerns and priorities in the classroom. The date of October 5 was chosen as the international day to honor teachers because it was on that date in 1966 that the UNESCO recommendation on the Status of Teachers was adopted by a special intergovernmental conference. Students in schools and colleges organize a variety of activities to entertain teachers on Teachers’ Day. Dancing competitions, singing competitions, teacher impersonation, games, and poem recitation are examples of these activities. Some students even plan picnics and send gifts, flowers, and handwritten cards to their teachers. All of this is a way for students to show their appreciation and admiration for their teachers.
